Parish Third World Group
And whoever gives to one of these little ones even a cup of cold
water because he is a disciple, truly, I say to you, he shall not
lose his reward. (Matthew 10, 42)
The Third World Group of St
Mary’s on the Hill was formed to give practical effect to these words of
Christ in Matthew’s gospel. Initially, this was realized by organising
Fair-Trade goods for sale in the Parish to give parishioners ethical
choices and raise awareness of the needs of those in the developing
world. The group continues this and has gone on to provide a focus in
the parish for prayer and reflection on the needs of others in the
developing world and to fund raise for work in South America and Africa
supporting:
A social worker in a parish in Lima, Peru.
This year-on-year support for a much needed social worker stemmed
from a need identified by Fr Ciaran, while he was with us in the parish.
The worker provides vital help for parishioners in their dealings with
the authorities.
The Edmund Rice school visit to Zambia A Clean Water for Children project (Mahi
Safi Kwa Watoto) in Nakuru Kenya. A local African committee set up by Fr
P J McCamphill of the St Patrick’s Missionary Society spearheads this.
The aim is to provide clean drinking water, by collecting and storing
rainwater. Women would otherwise have to carry water for half a mile or
more from wells that deliver water, so high in Fluoride, that it causes
dental, skeletal and other problems especially for children growing up
(consuming the water). A donation by the group has enabled 5 families to
be helped so far and more funding is planned to be sent.
Trocaire’s Global Gift plan to make a
sustainable difference to families in the developing worldOur Meetings The group meets generally on the first Tuesday of the month in
St Bernard’s and is constituted with Fr Whyte as President, Fr Lyons as
spiritual advisor and Danny McCarthy as Chair. The meeting opens and
closes with a prayer, is friendly and informal and new members are made
most welcome.
Fund Raising Our
fund raising activities span a wide range from family fast boxes to
table quizzes. Making St Brigid’s crosses for her feast day on 1st
February has proved a novel way of fund raising, but group members
valued the experience for the relaxed and convivial evening we had
making the crosses. We enjoyed reviving a traditional skill in good
company. In
complete contrast but no less enjoyable is the presentation of ‘Musical
Moments’ by Fortwilliam Musical Society. This plays to a packed house in
the Courtyard Theatre, Ballyearl, in May and is thoroughly appreciated
by all.
